AMMAN — On the heels of recent strikes, the Jordan Engineers Association’s (JEA) general assembly held a meeting on Saturday discussing salary raises and improving the status of public sector engineers.

During the meeting, which took place in Amman, the JEA council focused on strategies to enhance public sector engineers’ technical bonuses, which are granted for entry-level and senior engineers, JEA Council Member Mohammad Mahamid told The Jordan Times on Monday.

The meeting followed partial strikes by public sector engineers on January 8 and 9, as well as last Thursday, which pushed for a government response to engineers' demands for salary raises.

According to the engineers, bonuses promised by the government in 2012 and a 180 per cent salary raise have not been delivered, President of the JEA’s Public Sector Committee Raed Haddadin told The Jordan Times in January.

During Saturday’s meeting, the JEA council decided to stop the strikes for 30 days “with the intention of sending strong and positive signals to the government”, Mahamid said.

The general assembly will continue working to find a compromise satisfactory to all, according to Fawzi Mesed, deputy president of the association.

“We expect the outcomes of this meeting to be fruitful, and the JEA’s negotiations with the government to bring about strong results this time,” Mesed told The Jordan Times.
