AMMAN — Several social media users on Sunday voiced solidarity with the family of a delivery employee at a fast food chain who died in an accident during the snowstorm on Friday.
They called on the government to take legal measures against the restaurant that sent the employee to deliver an order in west Amman when the roads were icy and the police warned against driving.
Twitter users also called for imprisoning the driver of the car, that hit the 23-year old delivery man, who was reportedly driving at a high speed when the incident occurred.
“The driver should be sent to prison for life. There are many careless people,” Baker Maabrh (@bakermaabrh) tweeted.
Voicing sympathy with the family of the delivery employee,” Loai Khalil (@loai_2000k) said: “God be with his family and relatives.”
Manal (@Manal_khatib) tweeted: “The government and Labour Ministry should take measures against the restaurant.”
Others called for boycotting the restaurant, including Ghazy (@moodyghazy).
Duaa Hammad (@Moooonface) said the boycott would serve as a lesson to other greedy employers.
Omar Otaibi (@omar_otaini) tweeted: “It is ruthless to force him to work in such weather conditions.”
According to the Civil Defence Department, another person died in the accident in the capital’s Shmeisani neighbourhood.
“The two victims had an accident in the Shmeisani tunnel leading to the Interior Ministry Circle at 5:20pm, and when they went out to check the damages, they were hit by a motorist who lost control of his vehicle because of the ice,” Traffic Investigation Department Director Lt. Col. Basem Kharabsheh told The Jordan Times on Saturday.
Other vehicles slammed into them and a total of 10 cars were involved in the accident, he added.
The Public Security Department (PSD) had issued statements urging motorists to stay off the roads and not to use their vehicles unless in cases of emergency.
Kharabsheh said traffic officials had to issue tickets to motorists who defied the PSD’s warning and drove on the icy streets causing harm to others and themselves.
