AMMAN — The Royal Scientific Society (RSS) and the National Agriculture Research Centre (NARC), in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, held a three-day workshop supported by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre (UNEP CCC).
The workshop is the first of a series planned under the NDC (Nationally Determined Contributions) Action Project, which aims to provide the needed technical support for Jordan to prepare and adopt a consultation mechanism for NDC implementation, according to an RSS statement.
According to RSS, the workshop’s key objective was to build the capacities of the national institutions to enhance the NDC implementation process in Jordan.
The National Climate Change Focal Points attended the workshop from the different national institutions to learn more about the NDC under Paris Agreement and the main decisions of different COPs along with an overview of Paris Agreement articles.
Over three days, the workshop focused on Jordan’s experience in NDC development and updates including the key sectors for mitigation in Jordan and the development of the baseline and the mitigation scenarios.
The workshop also discussed the adaptation component, the principles and experiences of national adaptation projects in both the agriculture and water sectors, and the prioritisation and action plans.
The final day focused on NDC costings, and the investment plans with examples from the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), climate finance, Readiness Programme with Green Climate Fund through GGGI, and public and private finance for climate-related energy projects in Jordan presented by Jordan Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund.
The workshop offered specialised sessions delivered by a group of national experts from the RSS, the Ministry of Environment, NARC, GAM, the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund as well as experts from the UNEP and the UNEP CCC.
The workshop concluded by discussing a draft mechanism for national consultation on the preparation and implementation of nationally determined contributions and defining the roles and responsibilities of the relevant authorities.
The RSS in cooperation with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) has worked to provide technical support to the Ministry of Environment regarding the analysis of available mitigation scenarios and their inclusion in the Jordan Document for Nationally Determined Contributions.
The document was officially submitted during 2021 to the Secretariat of the Framework Convention on Climate Change, where Jordan announced its intention to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from all sectors by 31 per cent by 2030, concluded the statement.
