Traffic accidents claimed 562 lives in Jordan in 2022 — Interior minister

AMMAN — Minister of Interior Mazen Faraya, on Thursday emphasised the importance of uniting efforts to form clear strategies to reduce road accidents and stop the continuous loss of life on the roads.

During the opening of the third national workshop for the project titled "Awareness Campaigns and Law Enforcement to Increase the Use of Seat Belts and Child Restraints," funded by the UN Road Safety Fund, Faraya noted that the workshop reflects Jordan's efforts to reduce road accidents, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The minister said that the Ministry of Interior, through the Public Security Directorate, has been “proactive in promoting road safety awareness” and reaching out to the public through various means, including social events and lectures hosted in locations across the country.

Last year, Jordan witnessed approximately 170,000 road accidents, resulting in 562 deaths of various ages. In 2021, about 160,000 road accidents that led to 589 deaths were recorded, he said, noting that the increasing number of road accidents prompted joint efforts to amend the traffic law and ensure the highest level of traffic safety.

Yarob Badr, Regional Adviser on Transport and Logistics in ESCWA, commended Jordan's efforts to reduce road accidents and the advanced systems adopted in this regard.
