Terre des hommes holds Information sessions on rights of women, children under Personal Status Law

AMMAN — Terre des hommes (Tdh), in collaboration with the Sharia Judicial Council, held three information sessions on the social and economic rights of women and children within the Personal Status Law during a couple’s engagement phase, when conducting the marriage contract and in the event of separation or divorce.

The lectures were held in the Irbid, Amman and Karak governorates, according to a statement from the organisers.

The speeches outlined and clarified the legal duties and rights of couples during the engagement period, such as the difference between the paid dowry and a paid gift, and the guarantees of protection when conducting the marriage contract such as receiving the paid dowry, alimony and the spouses’ right to set conditions in the contract.

Requested conditions may include the right to education or continuing education and the right to separate financial entities, regardless of the wife’s employment status. Moreover, the judges explained how legal protections are applied in cases of separation or divorce, such as child custody and alimony.

Judge Muhammad Al Ababneh, Inspector of Sharia Courts of First Instance, delivered the lecture in Irbid at Idoun Charity Organisation. Judge Nael Al Na’saan, Director of the Directorate of Mediation and Family Reconciliation, spoke in Amman at the University of Jordan and Judge Husni Al Qarara’a, Inspector of Sharia Courts of First Instance, spoke in Karak at Al Balqa Applied University.

The sessions were implemented within Terre des hommes Lausanne’s (Tdh) project, funded by the “She Leads” programme, in partnership with Terre des Hommes Netherlands, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Idoun Charity Organisation, Creativity Club - Karak and in cooperation with the University of Jordan and Al Balqa Applied University. The “She Leads” programme aims to enable the active participation of girls and young women in decision-making regarding their future.
