Education Minister Omar Razzaz on Saturday announced the results of the 2018 Tawjihi winter session in a press conference on Saturday, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Of the 175,943 students who registered for the session, 150,502 sat for the exam, including 89,441 regular students and 76,021 private-study applicants, whose pass rate reached 66.1 per cent, Razzaz said.

Razzaz said that the passing rate was 69.7 per cent in the scientific stream, 53 per cent in literary stream, 66.4 per cent, 75.3 per cent and 78.9 per cent in the Sharia, IT and health educations streams respectively.

For vocational streams, he said that the overall pass rate reached 68.9 per cent in the industrial stream, 65.8 in agriculture and 74.2 for per cent in the hospitality stream, while 72.5 per cent passed in the household education stream.

Nour Hanna achieved 99.5, the highest mark in the scientific stream in the Kingdom and Dania Zghari came first in the literary stream with a mark of 94.2. In the IT stream, Salsabeel Jadouri and Malak Jbour obtained 86.3 and Balqees Sandouqa was the top achiever in the health stream with an average of 79.8.

At the press conference announcing the results, Razzaz said that the ministry is working to improve the education policies in line with His Majesty King Abdullah's vision detailed in the Royal Discussion Paper which, he described, as "guidelines for the development of the educational process".

The ministry has already taken various reform measures in the academic year 2017-2018 such as unifying the total sum of marks for all streams, reducing the number of subjects students have to study, and lowering the minimum pass average to 40 per cent, he said, adding that the ministry also decided to allow regular and private-education students to re-apply for exams in one subject to raise their general average for unlimited times.

Razzaz commended girls' excellent scores, noting that it is a global phenomenon and not only restricted to Jordan.

Following the announcement of the results, the Central Traffic Department personnel recorded 500 traffic violations related to students' celebrations.

However, the department noted that this year witnessed a drop in violations compared to last year, when 2,000 violations were recorded.
