Swiss NGO Tdh holds training for juvenile court judges

AMMAN — A three-day training course was held for juvenile court judges in Jordan by the Terre de hommes (Tdh), a non-governmental Swiss organisation that works globally for children’s rights and protection.

Seventeen juvenile court judges participated the training from March 3-5 in cooperation with the Judicial Council, said a Tdh statement.

The workshop focused on executive judges’ roles within the case of custodial and non-custodial measures imposed on juveniles and children, whether in conflict with the law or in need of protection or care, the statement said. 

It also concentrated on the judges’ power and how it can be utilised to effectively implement the measures imposed on children to ensure their rehabilitation and reintegration into their communities.

“This training helped us gather judges together to discuss the application of procedures and how the law articles are being utilised in order to better support children through the justice system,” said Taghrid Qtaichat, Tdh project manager. 

Tdh was established in Jordan in 2007 to support the humanitarian needs of refugees. In 2011, the Access to Justice programme was launched based on the rights of all children in conflict with the law in Jordan, the statement said.

“Terre des hommes is the first to facilitate such a training in Jordan. We definitely need more of this,” said Judge Suhair Tobasi. 

This event, under the “Enhancing Protection and Justice for Children Systems in Jordan” project, has been funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). 

The project aims to strengthen the protection system for children, youth and women in Jordan to empower them in becoming active members of change in combating and preventing violence against them, especially gender-based violence, the statement said.
