SSC sees rise in number of subscribers

AMMAN —  The number of currently active institutions in the Kingdom that are registered with the Social Security Corporation (SSC) is 57,507, showing an 8.8 per cent increase compared to the end of 2018. 

This number rose from 51,279 institutions in 2017 to 52,854 by the end of 2018, a 3.1 per cent increase, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Monday.

SSC Spokesperson Musa Sbeihi said that the capital alone currently has 59.8 per cent of the overall number of institutions registered with the corporation, according to Petra. 

The percentage of institutions in Irbid stands at 10.2 per cent of the total and  8.6 per cent in Zarqa, he stated, adding that the remaining 21.4 per cent is distributed around the Kingdom. 

Regarding the categorisation of institutions, 36.5 per cent work in the field of wholesale and retail trade, while the ones working in the manufacturing field reach up to 16.6 per cent, followed by 9.5 per cent working in the tourism sector and 7.4 per cent in the construction sector, the spokesperson said.

Micro enterprises, with only one to four employees, constitute the highest percentage of institutions registered with the SSC, at 70.9 per cent, Sbeihi said, noting that small enterprises with 5 to 19 employees amount to up to 19.9 per cent. 

Moreover, medium enterprises employing 20 to 99 people and registered with the SSC comprise 6.9 per cent of the total institutions, while big corporations that employ 100 workers or more constitute only 2.3 per cent. 

The percentage of private sector workers insured with the SSC stands at 50.7 per cent, public sector at 42.8 per cent and those subscribed optionally at 5.6 per cent, according to Sbeihi, who added that only 0.09 per cent, or 117 subscribers to the SSC work in charitable societies, out of the total 1.292 million SSC subscribers.
