AMMAN — There is a chance of snowfall on the northern mountainous areas during the early hours of Sunday morning, Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) Director Mohammad Samawi said on Saturday.
Samawi told the Jordan News Agency, Petra, that snowfall is also expected during the current depression on other high mountainous areas in the Kingdom during daytime on Tuesday.
He added that the JMD is currently observing another cold air mass that is forecast to affect the Kingdom next Friday and Saturday, which may result in snow, but Samawi preferred not to go into details this early on.
Today, it will be cold and cloudy across the Kingdom, with rain showers expected in the northern and central regions, and snow forecast over high mountainous areas, especially in the northern region, the JMD director said.
At night, rain is forecast to extend to the south, he added.
The JMD warned of low visibility in the early morning hours due to fog formation, especially in high mountainous areas.
It also warned of slippery roads during precipitation and frost formation at night.
On Monday night, the Kingdom is expected to be affected by a depression centralised over Cyprus, accompanied by a cold air mass that will bring rainfall to the northern region, which will later extend to the central parts.
Heavy rain is forecast during late night hours, and may be accompanied by thunder, lightning and hail.
On Tuesday, it will be rainy in most parts of the Kingdom, the JMD said, expecting heavy rain with thunder and hail.
The department forecast snow showers during the day on mountainous areas, with a chance of strong wind.
Also on Saturday, the Greater Amman Municipality announced medium alert level in preparation for the weather conditions, Petra reported.
The municipality said it receives emergency calls on (06/5359970) or (06/5359971), urging those living in underground apartments to take the necessary precautions to prevent any flooding.
