AMMAN — Environment Minister Taher Shakhshir on Tuesday inaugurated a system to monitor emissions coming from the chimneys of the electricity generation station in Sahab, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Shakshir said that the transportation sector is the largest consumer of energy in Jordan, with its share amounting to 46 per cent followed by the industrial sector, which consumes nearly 20 per cent, adding that both sectors cause dangerous gas emissions.
He said the energy sector contributes to 73 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions, 28 per cent of which come from energy generation. Shakhshir also noted that the ministry monitors pollution in the air through a network of 32 stations spread in Amman, Zarqa, Irbid, Mafraq, Balqa, Karak and Aqaba, which are home to 75 per cent of the population.
