AMMAN — Senate President Faisal Fayez on Wednesday called on the international community to exert “actual pressure” on Israel to resume peace negotiations based on a two-state solution in order to establish an independent Palestinian state, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

During a meeting with US congressional aides, Fayez presented the latest developments in the region and the repercussions of the Syrian crisis on Jordan, outlining the economic impacts caused by hosting around 1.3 million Syrian  refugees.

Jordan is powerful on the political and security fronts, but faces economic challenges because of the regional turmoil, Fayez noted, adding that it needs the support of the international community to enable it to continue performing its humanitarian role.

The Senate president highlighted the Kingdom’s pivotal role amid regional crises and its efforts to spread peace and tolerance.

For their part, the delegates commended Jordan’s role in assisting refugees and its role in combating terrorism and extremism.

Also on Wednesday, Fayez discussed bilateral relations with a Kuwaiti delegation headed by Kuwaiti Chairman of the Municipal Council Mhalhel Nasser Al Khaled, Petra reported.

During the meeting, Fayez thanked the Kuwaiti emir and people for standing beside Jordan and providing support to enable it to face economic challenges.

Investing in Jordan is investing in its national security, Fayez said, adding that it is also an investment in regional security, especially for Gulf countries.

He urged the Kuwaitis and Gulf countries to increase their investments in the Kingdom.

For their part, the Kuwaiti delegates commended the strong bilateral relations in various fields.
