Senate committee meets with South Korean parliamentary delegation

AMMAN — The Senate’s Jordanian-Korean Friendship Committee, chaired by Senator Maysoon Otoum, on Thursday met with member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the South Korean National Assembly, Lee Myung-soo, and an accompanying delegation.

The meeting, attended by Korean Ambassador to Jordan Kim Dong-gi, addressed ways to strengthen bilateral relations in various fields, especially in parliamentary matters, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Otoum said that Jordanian-Korean relations are "solid", and date back more than 60 years, reflecting their "deep-rooted" nature. Otoum also highlighted Jordan’s priority to enhance ties in terms of investment, parliament, cultural exchange, and the tourism and ICT industries.

She also affirmed His Majesty King Abdullah's efforts to achieve security, stability and peace in the region.

The senator also lauded South Korea’s position on the Palestinian issue, and Seoul's non-recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Otoum also noted the importance of South Korea's support to the Kingdom in various fields, especially in education and ICT, by providing grants, loans, aid and scholarships, expressing admiration for the South Korean expertise in these matters.

For his part, Lee commended the "distinguished" nature of bilateral relations, adding that his country is keen to expand and continue cooperation with Jordan, especially in education, technology and investments.

He also praised the Kingdom's "important and active" role under His Majesty's leadership, and its relentless efforts to achieve regional security and stability, referring to efforts exerted to solve the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution.

He referred to his country's appreciation for Jordan’s role in hosting Syrian refugees in spite of the Kingdom's limited resources.

Committee members stressed the need to attract South Korean investments to Jordan given the Kingdom’s "safe and stable" investment environment. 

Second Deputy Speaker of the Lower House, MP Nassar Heisa, also met with the South Korean delegates, and expressed his appreciation for South Korea’s support to the Kingdom in various fields. 

He also expressed the Kingdom's interest in benefiting from Korea’s economic experience, noting the importance of enhancing commercial, economic, industrial and agricultural cooperation. 

Lee stressed his country's keenness to further develop relations with Jordan, and South Korea’s readiness to expand cooperation in various fields.
