Seminar, virtual cultural programme held on Bangladesh’s golden jubilee

AMMAN — The Bangladesh embassy in Jordan organised a seminar and a virtual cultural programme on Tuesday in celebration of Bangladesh’s golden jubilee.

Speaking during the event, Bangladesh’s Ambassador in Jordan Nahida Sobhan said that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the nation of Bangladesh, had a vision for “Golden Bengal to free the country from hunger, poverty, illiteracy and communalism”. 

She also added that the achievements of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence are recognised globally.

“Today Bangladesh is considered as a role model in development in various fields including education, health, agriculture, IT and women empowerment,” the ambassador said.

Sobhan said that Bangladesh now is self-sufficient in food and fish production and is ranked second worldwide in garment exports.

She also added that the country has been able to lift six million people from poverty and no one dies of hunger in Bangladesh. Furthermore, the country has achieved a positive GDP growth during the COVID-19 pandemic period, she added.

There are over 70,000 Bangladeshi nationals living in Jordan now, an embassy spokesperson told The Jordan Times.

The embassy is working to strengthen trade agreements between Jordan and Bangladesh prompted by the Jordanian trade sector’s very good potential, the spokesperson said, noting that the trade balance is in Jordan’s favour for now.
