Safadi reaffirms 'full' support for UNRWA, discusses war on Gaza with French, Spanish counterparts

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi on Tuesday reaffirmed Jordan's “full support” of UNRWA in providing humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians in the war-torn Gaza Strip.

In a telephone call with UNRWA Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini, Safadi stressed that “supporting UNRWA is a humanitarian responsibility towards the unarmed people of Gaza that Israel is depriving of their right to life, food and medicine”, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

Safadi also hailed the efforts and sacrifices of the UN relief agency for Palestinian refugees, which “Israel has killed 92 of its staff”, and the commitment to its mandate, the statement said.

Safadi and French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna on Tuesday discussed efforts to build an international stance against the “catastrophic” Israeli war on Gaza, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Safadi underlined the importance of the upcoming international conference that France will host on November 9 in ending the war on Gaza, implementing ceasefire and delivering humanitarian assistance into the strip.

During a telephone call, Safadi commended France's vote in favour of the United Nations General Assembly's resolution on halting the war, protecting civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian commitments, Petra said.

Also on Tuesday, Safadi received a telephone call from the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares.

During the telephone conversation, the two top diplomats discussed the developments in Gaza and efforts to halt the war and protect civilians in the besieged strip.

Safadi stressed the need to “immediately” end the war on Gaza and the large-scale humanitarian catastrophe it has caused to the people of the Palestinian coastal enclave. Safadi also warned against the expansion of war and its repercussions on the entire region, Petra reported.

Safadi also thanked Spain for voting in favour of the Jordanian-drafted UN resolution on ending the war on Gaza and delivering relief aid.

Safadi reiterated the need to deliver humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians in the besieged enclave.
