Safadi participates in meeting with EU foreign ministers, calls for immediate halt to war on Gaza

AMMAN —  Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Monday participated in the meeting of the European Union's (EU) Foreign Affairs Council to discuss developments in Gaza and efforts to stop the war and ensure the protection of civilians.

Safadi emphasised the need for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and the delivery of “sufficient” and sustainable humanitarian aid to Palestinians throughout Gaza, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

Safadi met with his counterparts from Spain, Jose Manuel Albares; Finland, Pekka Haavisto, Bulgaria, Mariya Gabriel, Ireland, Micheál Martin, and the EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi.

Meetings went over the critical developments in Gaza and efforts to stop the war and protect civilians, Petra said.

Safadi stressed the urgent need to halt the ongoing war in Gaza and its “catastrophic” consequences, which violate the international law, and all human and ethical values.

 He called for Israel to comply with international will, calling for a ceasefire and the importance of delivering sufficient and sustainable humanitarian aid into Gaza.

Jordan’s top diplomat reaffirmed Amman’s absolute rejection of the forced displacement of Palestinians within or outside their homeland.

In press remarks ahead of the meeting, said that the only path to achieve security, stability, and peace in the region is the two-state solution that guarantees the establishment of an independent and sovereign state along the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living in peace alongside Israel.

“After 108 days of the Israeli aggression on Gaza, 25,000 Palestinians have been killed, Gaza’s infrastructure has been demolished, and hospitals have been attacked.”

 The Jordanian field hospital, which we sent to aid Palestinians with medical services, was also targeted by Israel on Wednesday, he added.

Responding to a question about Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s rejection of the two-state solution, Safadi said, “We have clearly said that the Israeli government not only declares its opposition to the two-state solution but systematically works to undermine it.”
