Safadi meets Egyptian, Saudi counterparts over Palestine

AMMAN — Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry on Friday stressed the need to provide protection to Palestinians and meet their legitimate rights of establishing an independent state on the pre-1967 lines, stressing that failure to achieve this will fuel regional conflict.

During a meeting on the sidelines of the extraordinary session of the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul, the two ministers reviewed Arab and Islamic efforts along with the international community to face the repercussions of the US decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

They called for starting an international investigation after the massacre perpetrated by Israel against defenceless citizens in Gaza, and highlighted the importance of ending the stalemate in the peace process. 

Safadi and Shoukry reiterated the importance of realising Palestinian consensus to serve Palestinian higher interests, and Safadi stressed Egypt’s efforts in this regard.

Both ministers commended “the deep-rooted ties and high levels of cooperation and coordination” between Amman and Cairo.

Also in Istanbul, Safadi held talks with his Saudi counterpart Adel Al Jubair, with talks focused on efforts exerted to help Palestinians, and means to develop bilateral relations, Petra reported.

The two ministers also went over means of cooperation and coordination to implement decisions of the extraordinary meeting of the foreign ministers of the Arab League, which was held on Thursday, and the OIC’s decisions to limit the repercussions of the US move to relocate its embassy into Jerusalem. 

Both ministers expressed keenness to develop bilateral strategic relations and enhance them at all levels.
