AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Sunday met with World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Cindy McCain to discuss cooperation between Jordan and the WFP in the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
Safadi stressed the importance of sustained international cooperation to ensure that aid reaches Gaza quickly and adequately. He also highlighted the essential role of the UNRWA in this arena, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
The meeting also addressed the Syrian refugee crisis, notably the decline in international support for both refugees and the organisations and countries hosting them.
Providing adequate assistance and maintaining dignified living conditions for refugees is a collective responsibility that should not be borne by host countries alone, Safadi said, warning that Jordan will not be able to cover the shortfall caused by cuts to UN aid programmes supporting refugees in the Kingdom.
Also on Sunday, Safadi met with UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza Sigrid Kaag, with talks focusing on efforts to intensify cooperation for the effective and sustainable delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The discussions also highlighted the ongoing cooperation between Jordan and the UN, particularly through the Jordanian land corridor, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
