Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs commends ICJ ruling on Israel’s case

AMMAN — Secretary-General of the Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs Abdullah Kanaan on Friday said that the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) decision not to dismiss Israel's case filed by South Africa, and to impose temporary measures on Israel to avoid the violation of the Genocide Convention reflects "human" consciousness and positions of free people and human rights defendants.
Kanaan said that the committee commends the ICJ's decision and considers it an important legitimacy step that restores confidence in international institutions, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
He added that the committee considers Jordanian efforts, led by His Majesty King Abdullah, as a reflection of the Kingdom's "historical" actions and positions that have always defended Palestine and its territories, people and Islamic and Christian holy sites.
The secretary-general said that this important decision should be accompanied by other procedures that guarantee delivering aid to the people of Gaza.
Kanaan also stressed the importance of urging Israel to adhere to international legitimacy resolutions and abide by the two-state solution through establishing a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, which is the only guarantor of peace and security in the region and beyond.
He added that this historic ruling is a humanitarian occasion to pay tribute to South Africa, which had brought the case against the Israeli occupation, noting that South Africa adopted a humanitarian message to confront apartheid and racism.
The secretary-general added that Israel's trial before the ICJ represents an important step towards the criminalisation of Israel and holding it accountable for its crimes.
The proceedings of this trial and its ruling serve as a moral boost for oppressed and colonised people, who feel that international organisations and forces that advocate democracy and human rights have abandoned them, finding themselves under the grip of a ruthless occupation, he added.
