Risha field Well 53’s production capacity reaches 8 million cubic feet of gas per day

AMMAN — The assessment results of Well 53 in Risha gas field showed a production capacity of 8 million cubic feet of gas per day (Mcf/D), the National Petroleum Company (NPC) announced on Wednesday.

NPC Director General Mohammed Khasawneh, in a statement, said that these results increase the field’s production capacity from 19 Mcf/D to 27 Mcf/D, noting that the Kingdom’s daily consumption of natural gas amounts to 350 Mcf/D.

The official also lauded the staff of the NPC who completed the drilling of Well 53 earlier this month, highlighting their role in boosting Risha field’s production through exploring the existing and new wells.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Hala Zawati, two weeks ago, announced that the drilling in Well 53 in Risha gas field has shown “promising results”, noting that potential size of production would be announced by the end of 2020.

Zawati stressed that this achievement comes in light of the commitment to Royal directives, which were translated into the 2020-2030 comprehensive strategy for energy.

The strategy aims for increasing the local generation of electricity to contribute 48.5 per cent of total consumption in 2030 compared with 15 per cent in 2019.

Well 53 has become Risha’s largest producing well, where exploration during the last two years yielded 10 Mcf of gas from Well 48 and Well 49 combined, while the other 12 wells together produced 9 Mcf.

The NPC’s extraction of natural gas totalled 229 billion cubic feet in the period extending from its foundation in 1995 until 2017.
