AMMAN — Public Security Directorate (PSD) Director Hussein Hawatmeh honoured 20 inmates at correctional and rehabilitation centres who passed the General Secondary Education Certificate Examination  (Tawjihi).

Sixty-seven inmates took the Tawjihi out of a total of 84 who registered for the exam, according to a statement published on the PSD website.

The highest score among the inmates was 81.25 per cent, the statement said.

Every year the rehabilitation centres’ management team, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, creates an atmosphere for the inmates to study and take the Tawjihi, the statement said.

“Rehabilitation centres provide the best atmosphere for inmates to grow. We want them to be positive members of society when they are released,” said Raed Saoudi, the International Projects’ Manager at the Correctional and Rehabilitation Centres.

Saoudi added that some perceive the correctional and rehabilitation centres to be inhumane, but “it is the complete opposite”.

“Not only are inmates encouraged to complete their education, but we also help them work and provide for their families while they’re still serving time. This helps them feel engaged with the outside world,” Saoudi said.
