AMMAN — Public Security Directorate (PSD) Director Obaidallah Maaytah on Wednesday attended the celebration organised by the PSD on the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which this year came under the slogan: “Together for the nation, we fight drugs.”

The event was organised in cooperation with the European Union and the German Development Agency (GIZ), the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

In his speech, Maaytah said that this celebration stressed continuous efforts to combat drugs, as well as to remember the significant efforts and sacrifices made by devoted individuals in Jordan and worldwide to fight drugs.

He pointed out that the drug is a global phenomenon that affects all peoples and nations and is a cross-border crime that knows no boundaries and does not discriminate between race, gender or colour, which greatly exacerbates the harm caused and the negative impacts on various security, social, and economic fields.

The PSD director stressed that the Royal directives continue to emphasise the need for diligent and ongoing work and cooperation among all relevant parties to confront drugs and stand as a strong barrier against anyone attempting to spread or promote these poisons, both inside and outside the Kingdom.

EU ambassador to Jordan, Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, underscored the EU’s keenness to cooperate with all countries worldwide in combating drugs, especially in light of the increase in drug smuggling and related crimes in recent years.

He pointed out that combating drugs requires providing a security and oversight umbrella for border crossings, where the EU is keen to implement with Jordan, through partnership and cooperation with the PSD, to enhance the technical capabilities of its personnel working at all border crossings.

Head of operations at the GIZ, Siegfried Leffler, said that the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is a real opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs and their negative impacts on societies in a way that ensures enhancing international cooperation in combating all forms of drugs.

He noted that Jordan is at the forefront of countries working to combat drug trafficking, stressing the GIZ’s keenness to maintain cooperation and coordination with the PSD and support its efforts to enhance its organisational, technical and advisory capabilities in the field of drug control.
