AMMAN — Police on Tuesday were searching in the capital for the body of a woman following the arrest of a suspect in connection with her alleged murder, official sources said.
Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said that law-enforcement agencies received information that a woman was murdered in the capital.
“Our law-enforcement agencies conducted a joint investigation that led them to a suspect,” Sartawi said.
Upon questioning the suspect, the police official told The Jordan Times, the suspect “confessed to killing the woman”.
The police official said that during initial questioning, the suspect claimed “that he murdered the woman over a dispute.”
“The suspect informed us that he dumped the victim’s body in one of the street garbage dumpsters,” Sartawi said.
The police official added that investigators are searching for the victim’s body.
Sartawi did not elaborate on the places investigators plan to search for the woman’s body.
Investigations are ongoing in the case, according to a statement by the Public Security Directorate.
Meanwhile, Solidarity Is Global Institute (SIGI), an organisation dedicated to women’s rights and public participation, issued a statement condemning the rise of violence against women in the public space.
“This type of violence must be taken seriously by all parties, including filing lawsuits against the perpetrators, even if the women refuse to file complaints,” the statement said.
The SIGI statement also referred to the number of murders committed in the first six months of 2023.
“Fifteen murders occurred during that period including 11 committed against females within the family,” according to the statement.
The women’s group called on the authorities to adopt the necessary measures for better protection of women and girls.
“The authorities must take the necessary measures to ensure protection, whether in public or private space, or both,” the SIGI statement added.
