AMMAN — The Senate Financial and Economic Committee on Sunday met with Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh and the economic team to discuss the general budget for fiscal year 2023.

Addressing several diverse topics, Senate President Faisal Fayez first urged the government to take “serious measures” to address poverty and unemployment, properly implement the law and adopt a policy of self-reliance through food security, modern agriculture and food manufacturing. The Senate president also emphasised the need to address declines in public administration.

Fayez highlighted the importance of strengthening the “internal front” in light of recent events in the occupied Palestinian territories, stressing the need to provide a conducive environment for progress on the comprehensive national modernisation project, led by His Majesty King Abdullah, and the project’s political, economic and administrative fields.

Fayez also noted the importance of dealing with “excesses” in the media, particularly on social media platforms, and addressing bullying through effective measures that reinforce the rule of law. He also called for effective measures to address violations of the law, especially those related to driving and “festive firing”.

The cost of traffic accidents is above JD300 million, he added.

Khasawneh affirmed that the Senate’s recommendations are always “taken seriously” by the government.
