AMMAN — A woman and three Gendarmerie officers who were injured in a shootout in Maan at dawn on Monday were recovering at hospitals in Amman and Maan, official sources said.
A 36-year-old man was shot dead when Gendarmeries forces raided a house in Maan, some 220km south of Amman, looking for a wanted person, Public Security Department Spokesperson Maj. Amer Sartawi told The Jordan Times.
“Residents of the house fired at our forces, prompting them to respond, and there was a heavy exchange of fire,” Sartawi said.
The shooting resulted in the death of the house owner, and the injury of his wife and the suspect, who managed to escape, he added.
The woman was rushed to Maan government hospital where she underwent surgery and remains in critical condition, Maan Mayor Majed Sharari told The Jordan Times.
Sharari said one suspect was arrested during the raid.
Meanwhile, the three Gendarmerie officers injured in the shooting incident were recovering at a military hospital in Amman and are listed in good condition, according to Sartawi.
Over the past few months, several instances of unrest have been recorded in Maan following the death of one person and the injury of a dozen others during police raids to detain wanted persons.
