AMMAN — Traffic violations recorded by the Greater Amman Municipality’s (GAM) newly installed cameras decreased by 65 per cent during the past two weeks, compared to those registered during the trial period (March 9-23), an official said Monday.

Mohammad Faouri, director of joint management at GAM, said most of the registered violations involved crossing red lights and speeding, noting that accidents in camera locations dropped by 45 to 80 per cent depending on the area, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Faouri said the cameras recorded 65,000 violations during the trial period, but violators were not required to pay any fines, according to Petra.

GAM started operating 22 new cameras last month to ensure public safety and organise traffic movement on the capital’s streets.

Majdi Alaween, head of GAM’s cameras department, previously told The Jordan Times that five of the cameras are installed at traffic lights, seven are fixed radar units and the rest are mobile radar units that can be placed on cars.

The cameras have been set up on the Mukhaddarat traffic light on Abu Baker Siddiq Street, the Ersal traffic light located at Al Quds Intersection, the Maslakh (slaughterhouse) traffic light on Jaish Street and two at Queen Zein Al Sharaf intersection in the Sweifieh area, according to Alaween.

The fixed radars are located on Prince Hashem Street near Abdoun Circle, Al Aqsa Street near the Civil Service Bureau premises, Shaheed Street in the Ain Ghazal area, Jaish Street on the Zarqa highway, Jordan Street, Abu Nseir Street and Hijaz Street in Dabouq, he said.
