AMMAN — The National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR) on Thursday stressed the need to speed up discussion and approval of the draft amendments related to the Law of the Right to Access Information, highlighting its critical role in promoting and protecting human rights.

In a statement issued on the International Day for Universal Access to Information, the NCHR said the adoption of the draft law must be in line with the Jordanian Constitution and international human rights standards.

The centre further emphasised that this legislation has a central role in the promotion and protection of various civil, political, economic, social and cultural human rights, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The law is instrumental in combating corruption in all forms and promoting good governance, including transparency, integrity, accountability and responsibility, the statement said.

The centre also said the right of access to information enjoys international guarantees through various treaties, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
