AMMAN — In an effort to promote health and well-being within the local community, 37-year-old Jordanian Mohammad Hijazi is spearheading an initiative to install gym equipment in public parks nationwide.

With the aim of equipping 200 parks nationwide, the initiative has already secured enough funding to outfit 10 parks, marking a stride towards a healthier and more active society.

Hijazi’s personal experience while studying in England is the driving force behind the initiative. During his studies, Hijazi benefitted from free gym facilities available in public parks, inspiring him to bring the same accessibility and health benefits to his fellow Jordanians.

The inclusion of gym equipment in public parks serves as a catalyst for many social, physical, and emotional benefits for individuals of all ages and backgrounds, Hijazi told The Jordan Times.

“Regular exercise has been proven to improve cardiovascular health, increase strength and flexibility and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes,” Hijazi said.

As part of making the initiative even more effective, Hijazi will implement a user-friendly application accessible through a QR code located on the machines.

The application will serve as a comprehensive resource, providing users with instructions on how to properly use the outdoor machines, Hijazi said, adding that beyond basic guidance, the application will offer valuable support from nutritionists and personal trainers.

Users will have access to expert advice on creating personalised workout routines, receiving nutritional guidance and even scheduling virtual consultations with professionals, Hijazi added.

By integrating technology and expertise into the initiative, Hijazi aims to ensure that people using the public park gym equipment have access to a wealth of knowledge to optimise their fitness journey.

“Regular exercise has long been acknowledged as a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle, and the availability of these facilities in public spaces significantly contributes to the well-being of the community,” Hijazi said.

From a social perspective, the installation of gym equipment in public parks is meant to foster a sense of inclusivity and unity, bringing people together for shared fitness activities, he added.

“Parks become hubs of social interaction, as individuals from different walks of life come together to engage in exercise, interact and build connections,” Hijazi said.

By providing accessible and free fitness facilities, individuals of all socioeconomic backgrounds can now engage in physical activity without the need for expensive gym memberships or equipment, said Hijazi.

“This democratisation of fitness ensures that everyone, regardless of their finances, can enjoy the advantages of exercise and lead healthier lives,” he noted.

Hijazi also stressed that the emotional benefits of gym equipment in public parks should not be overlooked. “Exercise releases endorphins, the body’s natural mood boosters, which can alleviate stress, anxiety and depression,” he said.

Additionally, the peaceful environment of public parks can further enhance mental well-being. “Regular outdoor exercise in these pleasant surroundings can enhance self-esteem, boost confidence and improve overall mental resilience,” Hijazi added.

“The launch of the first outdoor gym is expected to take place within two months,” Hijazi said.

The Ministry of Local Administration, through its programme Jordan Municipal Services and Social Resilience project, will secure funding sufficient for at least 10 outdoor gyms, an official at the ministry told The Jordan Times.

According to the official, the starting price for each gym installation is JD10,000.
