AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) on Monday stressed that it will be intensifying its campaigns against vendors on Quraish and Talal streets in downtown Amman every Friday.
Ahmad Ebbini, director of the GAM department for monitoring street vendors, said the two streets witness a heavy presence of vendors every Friday from the early morning until noon.
“They usually sell second-hand items. These vendors block the streets and make it difficult for motorists and pedestrians to drive or walk,” he told The Jordan Times over the phone.
He noted that the municipality started this campaign on last Friday and it has been successful so far.
“We hold these field visits in cooperation with the Public Security Department. We have only arrested two people and later released them,” he added.
Ebbini said GAM confiscates and discards the goods.
He noted that the department has made more than 250 field visits to monitor the spread of street vendors since the beginning of this year.
“We target areas like Basman, Wadi Seer and Sweileh. Vendors also go back to other areas that are not heavily monitored, so we are trying to cover as many places as possible around the capital,” he added.
