MPs applaud defeat of US-backed resolution condemning Hamas

AMMAN — The Lower House's Palestine Committee on Sunday applauded the United Nations General Assembly's failure to pass a US-backed resolution, condemning the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas for firing rockets at Israel.

In a statement carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, head of Palestine Committee Yihya Saud was quoted as commending the General Assembly member states that "challenged the US and voted against the resolution in support of the Palestinian people".

Saud added that Washington's failure in bid for a UN condemnation of Hamas has "proved the legitimacy of the Palestinian resistance and the failure of the Zionist enemy in convincing the international community with its aggressive policy".

Saud voiced appreciation of His Majesty King Abdullah’s efforts to defend the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights. 

The MP also said that the failure of the resolution also sends a message to the US administration that ending the Israeli occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital is the only way to resolve the long-running Palestinian-Israeli conflict. 

During Sunday's Lower House session, MP Fawzi Tuaimeh commended Jordan for voting in favour of the Irish resolution that called for ending the Israeli occupation.

The resolution called for “the achievement, without delay” of lasting Mideast peace on the basis of UN resolutions, singling out the December 2016 measure. And it reaffirms “unwavering support... for the two-state solution of Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security within recognised borders, based on the pre-1967 borders.”
