AMMAN — Facing charges of attempted smuggling, MP Imad Al Adwan appeared before the State Security Court (SSC), according to the head of the Liberties Committee at the Jordan Bar Association, Abdullah Abdulrazzaq Al Omoush.

In an interview with Al Rai Arabic daily, Omoush said that he attended the investigation proceedings at the SSC’s prosecutor’s office pertaining to Adwan’s case in compliance with a request from the association’s president.

Adwan’s rights were fully respected during the proceedings, and he appeared before the SSC without any form of restraints. The procedures were conducted in a comfortable environment, Omoush said.

The court granted Adwan permission to contact his brother to secure legal representation. Adwan, who is himself an attorney, appointed lawyer Ali Al Mubaidin as his counsel, Omoush said.

Adwan’s referral to the SSC Public Prosecutor initiated legal proceedings following his handover to Jordan by Israel, Omoush said, emphasising that these actions are in accordance with Jordanian law.

Omoush was briefed on the legal procedures that have already been initiated, and commended the integrity of the Jordanian judiciary. The measures taken against Adwan thus far comply with the provisions of the law, Omoush said.

Adwan’s trial will be based on allegations of offences committed within Jordanian territory, Omoush said, stressing that the Jordanian Public Prosecution and courts have full jurisdiction and authority over such matters.

Omoush emphasised the Jordanian judiciary's independence and impartiality, devoid of any external influence over its decisions.

Omoush also highlighted the importance of the collaborative relations between the Bar Association and the Jordanian judiciary.

MP Adwan’s return and subsequent trial before the judiciary exemplify the highest levels of national sovereignty for both the judiciary and the Jordanian state, Omoush affirmed, noting that this outcome is the fruit of tremendous efforts initiated through Jordanian diplomacy and foreign policy.
