AMMAN — Several security agents on Friday were injured, three of whom were transferred to hospital after they were assaulted by people participating in a wedding procession at the capital’s 100 Street, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

A security source said that personnel of a police patrol and a Gendarmerie unit stopped a bus in a motorcade, and an investigation with the driver revealed that he had been wanted by security departments.

When police officers tried to arrest the driver, several passengers attacked them.

The source added that other police patrols rushed to the scene and stopped assaulters using tear gas. Nine people were arrested, while the injured police agents were transferred to hospital.

Meanwhile on Saturday, the prosecutor general decided to refer seven people, who allegedly attacked the police officers, to rehabilitation and reform centres.

Another suspect was referred to the administrative governor who decided to detain him.

A security source stressed that there will be no complacency towards anyone who tries to assault security agents, and legal and administrative actions and measures will be taken against attackers.

Earlier in August, authorities arrested five people, who allegedly assaulted a traffic police who was reportedly writing tickets for cars taking part in a wedding procession, as they pulled over on a main street and blocked traffic.

A video that went viral on the Internet purportedly showed the suspects knocking down the officer over a roadside concrete fence.
