IRBID — The Irbid police department has beefed up its presence in the city’s markets after several brawls and fights broke out in commercial areas over the past few days, Irbid Police Director Brig.
Gen. Abdul Wali Shakhanbeh said on Monday.
He said the police will maintain order and security, noting that people need to feel safe, especially as larger numbers will be shopping ahead of Eid Al Fitr.
Shops that sell alcoholic drinks will remain closed on the night before Eid to reduce the chances of trouble or attacks similar to those in previous years, Irbid’s Governor Hassan Assaf said after a meeting held to discuss solutions to the chaos that prevailed in the markets.
In the past few days, knives were used and shots were fired in brawls, sparking fear among shoppers.
