AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld an April Juvenile Court ruling sentencing a minor to one year at a juvenile detention centre after being convicted of molesting a minor in Ajloun in September 2019.

The Juvenile Court found the minor guilty of molesting an 11-year-old boy while at a wedding and handed him three years in prison.

However, the court decided to reduce the sentence to one year to give the defendant “a second chance in life”.

Court papers said the victim was with his father attending a wedding when the defendant lured him to secluded area.

“The defendant sodomised the boy by force then released him,” according to court documents.

The victim went and immediately notified his father, the court papers said.

The Criminal Court prosecutor asked the higher court to uphold the sentence.

The higher court ruled that the Juvenile Court had followed the proper procedures and the defendant deserved the verdict he had received.

The Court of Cassation judges were Mohammad Ibrahim, Majijd Azab, Hayel Amr, Fawzi Nahar and Ibrahim Abu Shama.
