‘Ministry developing criteria to evaluate universities’

AMMAN — New criteria for evaluating the performance of public and private universities will be developed soon, a Higher Education Ministry official said on Sunday.

Hani Dmour, the ministry’s secretary general, said a committee will be assigned to come up with a unified evaluation system that covers various aspects.

Dmour told The Jordan Times that the evaluation seeks to identify points of strength and weakness within a university’s system.

The assessment process, he said, does not entail any interference in universities and their independence, but will be geared towards helping them address challenges, and supporting them.

“If a university has financial woes, we can help by finding funding sources, either external or through investments,” Dmour added.

He explained that indicators for the evaluation will include the number of research papers a university conducts in a year, projects implemented, the ratio of faculty to students, financial resources and the percentage of international students.

Currently there are 10 public and 19 private universities in the Kingdom.
