At meeting with King, retirees call for stricter law enforcement

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday voiced pride in the army and security personnel, and retirees, describing them as the “brave comrades-in-arms and protectors of the country and its march”.
During a meeting with a number of retired army officers on Wednesday, the Monarch voiced keenness on maintaining unaltered contact with this segment of society, expressing appreciation for the services “they did and are still doing for the country and its people”, according to a Royal Court statement.
His Majesty also stressed the importance of documenting the achievements of retired army officers and the services they offered to the country in the school curriculum, cultural works and even drama, the statement said.
The King also directed concerned agencies to gather all the thoughts and ideas presented by the attendees, especially their development proposals, to be sent to the government for review and implementation, according to the statement.
During the meeting, which was held at the residence of retired lieutenant general Jamal Shawabkeh in the capital’s eastern neighbourhood of Khashafiyet Al Shawabkeh, the Monarch discussed with the attendees Jordan’s position on the latest regional developments.
The attendees stressed the importance of promoting voluntary work and national values in school and university curricula which should also include the sacrifices of the ancestors and the country’s builders, the statement said.
They also called on the government to give more priority when it comes to development projects to underprivileged areas in the governorates, including east Amman.
They also called for intensified efforts by the government and the private sector to address poverty and unemployment through implementing job-generating investments.
Lauding security campaigns against outlaws, they called for more efforts to enhance law enforcement, citing the role of a professional and objective media in this regard, the statement said.
