Mayor checks on progress of BRT project

AMMAN — Amman Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh on Sunday reviewed the progress of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, according to  the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM).

Shawarbeh reportedly instructed the removal of all hindrances to the construction of sidewalks on either side of the Sports City intersection and the area extending from the traffic lights at the University of Jordan (UJ) Mosque towards the UJ Hospital, GAM said in a statement sent to The Jordan Times. 

The mayor reaffirmed GAM’s commitment to completely finish the infrastructure works of the BRT project by the end of 2020, with the exception being the Tareq intersection in Tabarbour due to the late floating of the tender related to that specific area. This delay, he said, will not affect the operation of the BRT. 

He confirmed that, to ensure comfortable pedestrian movement from one area to another, constructing sidewalks across the Kingdom is one of the project’s top priorities, alongside traffic improvement projects. 

The sidewalks planned by GAM, he added, will accommodate elderly pedestrians and people with disabilities, according to the statement.

At UJ, the statement continued, construction is still in progress on three modern stations that will provide elevators and escalators to serve students, university employees and citizens who visit the hospital and the National Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Genetics. 

Works also include the installation of two girders for vehicles travelling from Queen Rania Street towards Al Shaheed Street, and another to serve traffic moving from Queen Alia Street and Dakhilye Circle towards Sharif Bin Naser Bin Jameel Street, in addition to a station to serve passengers in the area, according to the statement.
