AMMAN — The Criminal Court has sentenced a man to three years in prison after convicting him of molesting his neighbour in April 2018.

The court declared the defendant guilty of molesting the woman on April 14 and handed him a four-year prison term.

However, the court decided to reduce the sentence by one year because the victim dropped charges against him.

Court papers said the victim was hanging some laundry on the roof of her building when the defendant approached her.

"The defendant touched the woman, who had her back to him and she started screaming," the court said.

Several neighbours rushed to the roof and managed to help her and grabbed the defendant until police arrived and arrested him, court documents added.

The Criminal Court's attorney general had asked the higher court to uphold the three-year ruling against the defendant.

Meanwhile, the defendant contested the verdict through his lawyer, arguing that the victim provided contradictory statements.

However, the higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and correct and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.

The Court of Cassation judges were Mohammad Ibrahim, Naji Zubi, Yassin Abdullat, Majid Azab and Saeed Mugheid.
