AMMAN — The State Security Court (SSC) on Sunday sentenced a man to 15 years with temporary labour after convicting him of armed bank robbery, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The defendant not only committed an armed bank robbery in Amman in 2019, but also threatened societal safety and security, disrupting public order, according to the court.

Seizing an amount of JD12,221, the defendant fled the scene, only to be pursued by authorities, who arrested him on the same day.

In a separate ruling, the SSC sentenced a repeat offender to permanent labour and imposed a fine of JD20,000 after convicting him of drug smuggling,  Petra, reported.

The defendant returned to smuggling narcotics in Jordan after concluding his 15-year sentence in a rehabilitation centre.

The concerned authorities arrested the defendant, and his accomplice, who attempted to smuggle 70,000 narcotic pills to the Kingdom from a neighbouring country.

The defendant’s accomplice, who was fined JD10,000, was responsible for receiving the narcotic substances upon their arrival to the specific border crossing, according to Petra.
