AMMAN — The Cassation Court has upheld a June Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a man to 13 years in prison after convicting him of attempting to murder his sister and her neighbour in Zarqa in April 2020.

The Criminal Court declared the defendant guilty of stabbing his 29-year-old sister and her neighbour on April 28 after discovering an unknown phone number on his sister’s phone and handed him a 13-year prison term.

Court papers said the defendant saw a strange number on his sister’s phone and plotted to murder her.

On the day of the incident, the court maintained, the defendant went to his sister’s home and took her to a separate room away from her children’s eyes and stabbed her repeatedly on different parts of her body.

“The defendant then went to the house of his sister’s neighbour and the minute he saw him, he stabbed him multiple times on his neck and back,” court papers said

The victims survived the assault after undergoing surgery at a nearby hospital, the court papers added.

The defendant did not appeal his verdict at a higher court.

The Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the rulings.

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Fawzi Nahar, Nayef Samarat, Majid Azab, Ibrahim Abu Shamma and Hayel Amr.
