AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld an April Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a man to three years in prison after convicting him of molesting a teenager in Irbid in December 2020.

The court declared the defendant guilty of sexually assaulting the 17-year-old boy on December 8 in Irbid city and handed him the maximum sentence.

Court papers said the defendant and the victim were sitting in a truck garage conversing.

The defendant convinced the teenage boy to engage in sexual activities with him and the victim agreed.

"The defendant took the boy to a deserted area behind a truck and proceeded to engage in sexual activities with the teenager," court transcripts said.

However, the police were notified of the incident by bystanders and arrested the defendant, according to court papers.

The Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the sentence against the defendant "because the punishment he received was proper".

The defence, meanwhile, asked the court to acquit his client because "the court relied on weak evidence".

However, the higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.

The Court of Cassation judges were Mohammad Ibrahim, Yassin Abdullat, Hayel Amr, Fawzi Nahar and Nayef Samarat.
