AMMAN — A man disguised in women’s clothes escaped with JD22,000 after he robbed a bank on Monday, the fourth bank robbery this month, according to official sources.

The incident occurred around the afternoon when a man entered Etihad Bank in Mahes and robbed it at gunpoint, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.

“No one was injured in the incident and we are currently investigating the robbery and reviewing surveillance tapes and other evidence,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

Etihad Bank Jordan issued a statement saying that their bank was robbed at gunpoint and that JD22,000 in cash was stolen, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

“No one was injured in the incident and the authorities were immediately notified," the bank statement said, adding that “clients need not worry about the incident, since the money at the branch is insured, and work is continuing as usual at all our branches”.

Three banks have been targeted over the past few weeks and all three suspects were arrested shortly after the robberies.

In 2018, a money exchange shop and eight banks were targeted in Jordan, with some cases involving armed robbers, while other robbers used fake weapons.

Seven of the nine robbers have been arrested so far, while two suspects, who escaped with over JD105,000 in cash from two banks in the Wihdat neighbourhood and in Irbid, remain at large.
