Mahafzah obtained his PhD in medicine from Damascus University in 1977 and another PhD in biology from the American University in Beirut.

He received his Board Certification from Yale University in 1988. Mahafzah previously served as UJ vice president for medical faculties’ affairs and dean of the medicine faculty.

The Higher Education Council (HEC) had recommended appointing him as the new UJ president to succeed Ekhleif Tarawneh.
