AMMAN — Chairman of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) Khaled Al Kalaldeh on Wednesday said the final results of the governorate and municipal council elections are official and candidates have 15 days to contest the results.

Kalaldeh’s remarks were made during a press conference to announce the official results of the elections.

“The results and the names are all posted on the IEC’s website and anyone wishing to contest the results at the concerned courts can do so in the next 15 days,” Kalaldeh told reporters.

The IEC chairman said the commission received some comments and complaints that were “examined and dealt with by a special committee”.

A total of 1,363,465 citizens cast their ballots, with 15.56 per cent of males voting and 14.08 per cent of females voting, according to the IEC.

The total number of eligible voters was 4,602,135, including 2,437,340 women.

The final official number of individuals registered to run for the elections is 4,644, including 846 women.

In addition, Kalaldeh said that the IEC referred 10 cases in total “to the criminal prosecutor for alleged violations related to the elections”.

“The elections did not witness any major violations that affected or hindered the election process,” Kalaldeh stressed.

IEC officials said earlier this week that some 5,000 individuals, including 100 international persons, would be monitoring the elections.

The Public Security Directorate (PSD) dispatched over 55,000 personnel to monitor 1,850 polling stations, which contained 6,937 ballot boxes.

PSD Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said on Wednesday that police forces dealt with some “incidents of riots in polling stations in some of the Kingdom’s governorates”.

“There were limited acts of riots such as burning tyres and in one incident the firing of live ammunition that was dealt by our forces,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

The police official added that 74 people were arrested as a result and referred to the concerned authorities for further questioning.
