AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday held talks that focused on the latest developments in the Palestinian issue and efforts exerted to push forward the peace process.
The discussions, held at Al Husseiniya Palace, highlighted the importance of sustaining coordination and consultation over developments related to the Palestinian issue and Jerusalem, according to a Royal Court statement.
In this regard, His Majesty renewed the Kingdom's support to the Palestinians in defending their legitimate rights to freedom and an independent state on their national soil.
King Abdullah reiterated that Jordan, in coordination with all stakeholders, will continue exerting all efforts aimed at reviving the peace process and launching negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis, according to the two-state solution, the Arab Peace Initiative and international legitimacy resolutions, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The King noted that reaching a comprehensive and just peace is the only way to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and realising stability and security in the region.
The Monarch also renewed the Kingdom’s rejection of unilateral Israeli measures and recurrent attacks on holy places in Jerusalem, stressing that Jordan would keep playing its historical role in preserving Islamic and Christian holy sites in the city, under the Hashemite custodianship.
For his part, Abbas commended the Jordanian role in defending the Palestinian issue and supporting Palestinians and their just cause, as well as protecting Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.
Several senior officials from both sides attended the meeting.
