King meets NATO officials, Belgian PM in Brussels

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah met on Monday NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and members of the alliance in Brussels to discuss bilateral relations, especially in relation to anti-terrorism efforts, according to a Royal Court statement.

The meeting focused on ways to enhance the efforts of NATO with countries of the Middle East and Africa who have stakes in fighting terrorist groups.

His Majesty highlighted the importance of the cooperation between concerned countries, stressing that this war is to be fought by Arabs and Muslims in the first place, with the help of friendly nations to eradicate terrorism which, he stressed, has nothing to do with Islam or any religion.

The King also said that it is important to protect Islam from terrorist groups aiming at destruction, murder and disorder, highlighting as well the importance of defending Muslims in Europe and protecting them from Islamophobia, as well as enhancing commonalities between followers of different religions.

Stoltenberg expressed appreciation of the relations between NATO and Jordan, and said that it is important for them to continue working with the Kingdom under the directions of His Majesty to fight the danger of terrorism that is threatening the future of Middle Easterners and the world.

While in Brussels, His Majesty met Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel to discuss bilateral relations and developments in the regional and international arenas, the Royal Court said. 

The two sides highlighted their keenness to enhance their relations in political, military and security fields.

The talks also covered developments in the Middle East and ways to fight extremist groups.

His Majesty highlighted Jordan’s efforts to combat terrorism through a comprehensive strategy involving all stakeholders, stressing the importance of promoting the true image of Islam as a peaceful religion and addressing Islamophobia as well as defending Muslim communities in Europe.

The meeting also covered the issue of foreign fighters joining terrorist groups, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and the Syrian and Iraqi crises.

Michel pointed out that Belgium is looking forward to deeper relations with Jordan, and voiced appreciation for His Majesty’s efforts to address regional woes. 

His Majesty is expected to address the EU Parliament in Strasbourg Tuesday before flying to Morocco for a two-day official visit, accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Rania.
