AMMAN — The Jordanian Seismological Observatory (JSO), an affiliate of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources,  on Wednesday reported a 3.9-magnitude earthquake in the northern region of the Kingdom near Lake Tiberias. The JSO said that the earthquake was recorded at 1:50 pm, noting that residents in proximity to the epicentre might have experienced the tremors, as reported by the Jordan News Agency, Petra. Earlier in January, the JSO announced that it had recorded 1,126 seismic activities in 2023. Of these, 281 were local tremors detected within the Kingdom and its adjacent border areas. JSO President Ghassan Sweidan provided insights into the seismic landscape of Jordan and its neighbouring regions, noting that the seismic activity aligns with the boundaries of the Arabian Plate, specifically in the Gulf of Aqaba and the Dead Sea Rift. Furthermore, he highlighted that seismic studies reveal a lower level of seismic activity in the central and eastern regions of Jordan.
