Jordan's major dams at 36% capacity after recent rainfall — Water Ministry

AMMAN — The Kingdom's major dams now hold 36 per cent of their total storage capacity of 336.4 million cubic metres (mcm), the Water Ministry said on Sunday. The recent rainfall channelled over 1.2mcm of water into the country’s major dams, with storage at the dams reaching 122mcm, Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abul Saud said in a statement carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The minister said that recent precipitation raised the overall precipitation seen since the start of the wet season to 67 per cent of Jordan’s long-term annual average rainfall of 8.1 billion cubic metres.

The ministry’s figures showed that Karak witnessed the highest amount of precipitation during the recent depression at 35.8 millimetres (mm) of rain, while Amman received 6.9mm, Balqa 4.6mm, Madaba 1.8mm and Zarqa 2.4mm.

Jerash received 6.6mm of rain, Mafraq 1.2mm, Irbid 5.8mm, Ajloun 16.4mm, Tafileh 15.3mm, Maan 6.4mm and Aqaba 0.6mm.
