Jordanian, Syrian women showcase products at east Amman market

AMMAN — Jordanian Nisreen Hadid, who has been receiving vocational training for over a year, says her Syrian colleagues have enhanced her learning experience. 

“It is good to work with [Syrians] as I have been fortunate to meet new friends and it is a good chance for both Syrians and Jordanians to learn from each other, especially in cooking,” Hadid told The Jordan Times.

Hadid was speaking at a one-day market in east Amman, where Jordanian and Syrian women from a vocational training centre showcased their products. 

Laila Tuqan, who heads the 63-year-old vocational centre affiliated with the Jordan Red Crescent Society, said all members of the community have benefited from the facility, including non-Jordanians. 

“The idea is to hone the skills and abilities of women so that they can pitch in to meet the needs of their families. We teach them several skills, including how to use a computer, design and hairdressing as well as embroidery,” she told The Jordan Times.

Um Ammar, from Homs, has been in Jordan for three years, and said this was her first time taking part in a market. 

“I took part in the exhibition by presenting food products I made at my house,” she said.  

A mother of five, Um Ammar said she hoped the market would help her reach more customers and promote her home-made goods.
