Jordanian banks vow to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities

AMMAN — HH Prince Mired, president of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (HCD), has held a series of meetings with the heads of Jordanian banks to ensure persons with disabilities’ (PWD) access to financial services, in accordance with the Central Bank of Jordan’s Law on Rights of PWDs No.18 for 2018.

The prince drew the banks’ attention to invest in clients with disabilities and highlighted the need for a unified general practice guaranteed by the bank’s policy that would raise the service providers’ awareness and understanding of the instructions to be fully implemented, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Monday. 

Chairpersons of the boards of Jordan Kuwait Bank, Al Ahli Bank, Housing Bank, Al Etihad Bank and Cairo Amman Bank expressed their readiness to implement a plan with the HCD to help ensure banking services inclusion of people with disabilities, as well as meet the requirements of accessible financial services and respect confidentiality and privacy at the same time.

As per the CBJ instructions for financial consumer protection for customers with disabilities, issued pursuant to the law on the rights of people with disabilities, each bank in the Kingdom shall provide 10 per cent of its branches with the proper accommodations to ease access to banking services for customers with disabilities.

Also on Monday, Al Diaa charity association held the 23rd graduation ceremony for children with vision impairment, under the patronage of HH Prince Mired.

Deputising for HH Prince Mired, Deputy President of the HCD Basel Tarawneh stressed that all the Kingdom’s institutions have demonstrated particular attention for people with disabilities, which has been shown by commitment to international agreements and charters in connection with the rights of persons with disabilities.
