Jordan reaffirms support for Palestinian statehood, two-state solution in statement submitted to ICJ

AMMAN — In its written submission to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague, Netherlands, Jordan affirmed its stance in support of Palestinians’ right to self-governance and the establishment of an independent sovereign state on the June 4, 1967 lines, with occupied Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the Arab initiative and relevant United Nations resolutions, and on the basis of the two-state solution, the sole way to achieve a just and peaceful solution. 

In its argument, the Kingdom stressed the need for Israel, as the occupying power, to respect the historical status quo in Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian sanctities, noting that Jordan is committed to upholding its historic Hashemite Custodianship, according to a Foreign Ministry statement. 

Jordan called on the international community to halt Israel’s unilateral and illegitimate actions that hinder the peace resolution. 

Jordan's argument covered the consequences of Israel's continued violations of Palestinians’ rights to self-governance, the long-term impact of occupation, actions that target the status of Al Quds Al Sharif and steps to alter the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem.

The Kingdom filed a written case with the ICJ in The Hague on July 24, based on the resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 30, requesting the ICJ to issue an advisory opinion on the legal consequences of Israel's ongoing violations in the occupied Palestinian territories.
